The Jaap Steenbergen Stipendium, named after one of the first hematologists working in the Netherlands, is awarded annually by the NVvH to a young researcher who has written the best hematological thesis. This year it was awarded to Roger Mulet Lazaro from the hematology department of the Erasmus MC.

Roger Mulet Lazaro received his PhD from Erasmus University Rotterdam on January 19, 2023 with the thesis entitled “Epigenetic regulation in normal and malignant hematopoiesis” under the supervision of Prof Dr Ruud Delwel and Dr Bas Wouters. The thesis can be read here.

Roger's research focuses on understanding the mechanisms that lead to abnormal expression of genes in hematopoietic precursor cells, ultimately causing leukemia. Roger is a bioinformatician who understands both the “Bio” and “Informatics” sides of the profession. This award is a fantastic incentive for Roger to further develop in this profession. In addition to six published experimental chapters, his thesis contains a detailed introduction to the principles of gene regulation. Part of this introduction can now be read as a review in the magazine 'Hemasphere'. We are pleased that Roger will remain associated with our department. He has now started as a bioinformatician in the hematology department in Mathijs Sanders' group.

On January 25, 2024, Roger received the Jaap Steenbergen stipendium during the Dutch Hematology Congress, consisting of a certificate and a cash prize of €5,000.
