Dr Ningqing Liu has received a NWO grant for unraveling the role of the BAF-complex in gene regulation. NWO grants are intended for innovative, fundamental research of high quality and/or scientific urgency.
Gene expression controls essential processes in multicellular organisms. The BAF complex is a protein complex that modifies chromatin to allow genes to be expressed. Mutations in BAF are the cause of various diseases, including more than 20% of human tumors. In this project, Ningqing Liu aims to unravel the regulatory role of two important components of the BAF complex: the proteins SMARCB1 and BRD9. These proteins are often mutated or amplified in cancer or neurodevelopmental disorders. Understanding the regulatory functions of these components of the BAF complex may clarify their disease-causing role and provide new treatment strategies.
